Walter Zapp Award: Coveted award for outstanding scientific achievements
The fourth presentation of the Walter Zapp Award took place at the Latvian Academy of Science in Riga, Latvia on the 5th of September 2011. The prestigious award is offered to scientists, researchers and developers who have achieved outstanding and innovative thechnological developments in their given field of research.
This year, the awards were presented to Dr. Kazimir Lapuska for his work on „Design for Photography“ and to Dr. Maris Abele for her work on „Laser Engineering for Cosmic Observations”.
Walter Zapp, inventor of the legendary 8x11mm subminiature camera – also known as the „spy camera“ – was born in Riga on the 4th of September, 1905. In 2001, he returned to his place of birth to receive an honorary doctorate by the University of Riga for his lifetime achievments. Since then, this award is conferred every two years.
