MINOX BL 10x44 Tradeoff

It’s hard to believe that when I moved to California nearly a decade ago, I thought any binoculars would work for hunting out here. After suffering through headaches, frustration at not being able to see game, and not completely understanding what I was doing wrong, I finally talked to some folks and learned so much about the proper use of quality optics. Here's a look at what I currently use (left) and what I came to Cali with (right).

Back in NY, I really had no need, or desire to scan far off places in search of wild game to hunt. I could simply walk into the woods, set up in a treestand, and wait. How times have changed for me! Now I must scan the landscape for hours in search of game to pursue. To be honest, I love it! Hunting whitetail will always be one of my favorite things to do, but hunting mule deer in the high desert is such an exciting experience.

MINOX BV 8x42 BR Reveiw

I have to say that the binoculars look great and feel great in the hand. At 780g they aren't particularly light, but this gives a reassuring feel of quality. They feel extraordinarily well made. I know Minox take great pride in the build quality of their binoculars and subject them to stringent quality control inspections. Clearly, this contributes to the high build quality and offers the customer reassurance.

The focussing on the model I tried was very smooth, except for a small section near the close focus which felt like the focus wheel was scraping off the side of the binocular. I must say, I am ultra critical of focusing and this anomaly wouldn't have stopped me from buying the binoculars. The focusing wheel is large enough to use two fingers and take about one and half turns anticlockwise from close focus to infinity.

Years of enjoyment with the MINOX BD 15x58 BR

Hi, I’m Deon Dicks, a seasoned hunter and guide from Middle Arm, Newfoundland. I've independently produced two series of hunting DVDs entitled “Huntin on the Rock” and “Newfies in the Yukon”. We've got some great game up here in Canada, arguably some of the best moose in the world right here in my backyard; I've been hunting and guiding all my life and ever since I can remember, I’d dreamed about owning a set of professional binoculars. It only took me about 30 years before I decided to make that investment and purchase a pair of Minox binoculars. I do a lot of long distance viewing, so I went for the MINOX 15x58 series, and what a difference compared to what I’d been using!

Let There Be Light... Observing wildlife in the dark with the MINOX NV 351 Night Vision Device

MINOX, as you may already know, is the company perhaps made most famous by the James Bond spy cameras. Recently, the “Schweizer Jäger” (Swiss Hunter) magazine tested the MINOX NV 351 night-vision monocular. In the following review they bring light into the darkness.

As I seem to remember, in the early 1990s night vision devices were generally offered in the hunting magazines and journals for horrendous prices. They usually had an unpleasant smell of sticky rubber and originated from somewhere in Russia. Since I was unsure of legal implications and health issues were not clear, I decided to leave them well alone.
