THE BIANCHI CUP

Precision and technology at the highest level

The Bianchi Cup has been regarded as the crown jewel of action pistol shooting since 1979 – a competition that demands maximum precision under intense time pressure. For many shooters, it represents the ultimate endurance test: four demanding disciplines, strict rules, and zero margin for error. Our MINOX brand ambassador Yvonne Steinke will soon compete in the Open Division – armed with her sidearm, extensive experience, and in the future, the MINOX RV1 as a reliable companion.

Four disciplines – four challenges

The competition comprises the Practical Event, Barricade Event, Falling Plates, and Moving Target.

Practical Event

The Practical Event forms the foundation of action pistol shooting, requiring precision at varying distances between 10 and 50 yards (approx. 9.1 m to 45.7 m) – combined with diverse shooting positions. Shooters fire from standing, kneeling, or lying positions, sometimes unsupported, sometimes rested. Multiple series are shot, each with clearly defined distances and tight time limits. The key challenge is combining precision, time management, and stable shooting posture. Especially at longer distances, the quality of the sight and trigger becomes critical for consistent groupings.

Barricade Event

In the Barricade Event, the focus is on precise shooting from cover – with fast, tactical transitions. Shooters fire from alternating positions behind barricades, both left and right, sometimes one-handed. Distances range from 10 to 35 yards (approx. 9.1 m to 32 m), requiring rapid position changes without losing grip or aim. Mastering weapon control in unusual angles and quickly achieving a stable shooting position is essential – skills that closely resemble hunting scenarios with limited mobility. Here too, the features of the RV1 are central.

Falling Plates Event

In the Falling Plates Event, the goal is to hit six steel plates (each 20 cm in diameter) quickly and reliably. The plates are arranged on a rack at distances of 15, 20, and 25 yards (approx. 13.7 m, 18.3 m, and 22.9 m). Shooters have only a narrow time window per series – between six and nine seconds, depending on the distance. Reaction speed and precise aiming are paramount. This is where red-dot sights like the MINOX RV1 really shine: allowing lightning-fast, two-eyed aiming and giving shooters precious seconds – both in competition and in hunting-like scenarios.

Moving Target Event

In the Moving Target Event – or “Mover” – shooters must hit a laterally moving target with precision. The 24 × 24‑inch (approx. 61 × 61 cm) target moves at a constant speed across a 60‑foot (approx. 18.3 m) opening – in just six seconds. Shooters must deliver precise shots at varying distances within this brief period. This discipline demands utmost focus, perfect timing, and a feel for lead – all reminiscent of driven hunt situations, where game crosses the shooting field on short notice.

Open Division: Maximum performance through technology

In the Open Division of the Bianchi Cup, high-end technology is explicitly allowed – and encouraged. Red-dot sights, compensators, extended sight lines, and optimized triggers are intended to help the shooter perform at their best. The goal is to maximize precision and speed with perfectly tuned gear – a seamless fusion of technology and skill. The MINOX RV1 was originally engineered for driven hunts, where fast, two-eyed aiming at fleeting game is crucial – an environment where the RV1’s rugged build, intuitive controls, and bright reticle excel. These attributes also make it a dependable choice in competition. Especially in disciplines like Falling Plates or Moving Target, where reaction time and sight clarity are vital, the RV1 proves it performs not only on the hunt but also on the range.

Combining competition and hunting

The Bianchi Cup compellingly demonstrates the close link between precise shooting and modern technology – both in sport and in hunting. Requirements such as rapid target acquisition, reliable optics, and steady weapon handling are nearly identical in both realms. The MINOX RV1 brings exactly these qualities, helping shooters deliver precise hits under pressure. Since its inception over four decades ago, the Bianchi Cup has not only shaped competitive spirit but also driven the evolution of pistol shooting. It sets standards in shooting technique, safety regulations, and equipment innovation. Today, the competition is an international benchmark for elite shooters, offering a fascinating experience for anyone interested in fast and precise shooting – whether in sport or on the hunt.

Interplay of technology and skill

The Bianchi Cup is more than just a competition – it is a measure of discipline, technology, and mental strength. With the MINOX RV1, shooters have a sight that sets new standards in speed, precision, and usability. Whether in competition or on the hunt – when every millimeter counts, you can rely on a top-tier sight like the RV1.
