TEST RESPORT: MINOX RS-6 2.2–14x50

Solid all-round optics with “Made in Germany” quality

In recent years, MINOX has consistently modernized its line of hunting optics. With the RS-6 series, the brand makes a return not only visually, but also technically, to the relevant mid-range segment of premium riflescopes – made in Germany, with a focus on everyday hunting practicality. The 2.2–14x50 is likely the most versatile model in the line-up: a true all-round solution for combined day, night, and driven hunts.

Versatile magnification range

From driven hunts to 200-meter shots – one optic for (almost) everything

With a base magnification of 2.2x, the field of view remains wide enough for quick shots at fleeing game. A typical use case: driven hunt for wild boar in blackthorn – target acquisition is smooth and intuitive, without a tunnel view. At the upper end (14x), even distant game can be clearly identified or precisely shot – for example, roe deer at the 180-meter mark in a rapeseed field. This broad zoom range makes the RS-6 a true all-round hunting optic: once zeroed, it stays on the rifle – whether during roe deer season, rutting, or winter hunts.

Compact design for add-on devices

Why shorter is sometimes better

With an overall length of only 323 mm, the RS-6 is one of the most compact optics in its class. This is not just a cosmetic detail – in practice, it means: more room on the rifle for add-on devices. Especially during night hunting with a thermal add-on for wild boar, it becomes clear how crucial a short build is when considering suppressors, mounting height, and eye relief. Thanks to standardized outer diameters, the RS-6 can be used with common 56 mm clamp adapters – a clear improvement over previous MINOX models, where adapters often only fit improvisationally.

Features & Handling

Well thought-out, functional – with minor weaknesses

The handling is pragmatically designed for hunting: the side turret controls both the illuminated dot brightness (10 levels) and the parallax adjustment, which ranges from 45 m to infinity. This is sufficient for stand hunting – however, those using a rear clip-on device will notice the lack of close-range adjustment. Focusing under 30 m is only partially possible, which can be problematic when using rear clip-on devices in forest hunts. The illuminated dot itself is fine enough for precise shots, even at longer distances. A tilt sensor automatically turns off the illuminated dot after 10 minutes – upon movement, the electronics reactivate. In practice, this works reliably, even after repeated impacts or repositioning of the rifle. On bright days or in snowy conditions, however, the illuminated dot could be a bit stronger.

Ballistic Turret & Retrofit Option

BDC – when distance matters

The optic is available with or without a ballistic turret (BDC – Bullet Drop Compensation). Those hunting at longer distances – for example, in mid-range mountains or on foxes in open fields – can easily retrofit the turret. In practice, the click behavior during zeroing was precise and repeatable. The box test to verify the clicks, also went smoothly – no surprises with returning to zero.

Field Use & Mounting Routine

Tested on a Mauser 25 – everyday suitability confirmed

In the test, the optic was mounted on a Mauser 25 – used for roe bucks, wild boar, and foxes. The rail variant made mounting significantly easier: place the optic, screw it on, done. No stress with clamps, no compromises in alignment. During twilight and new moon sits with clip-on devices, the optic delivered a clear, high-contrast image. As soon as it gets too dark, the technology takes over anyway – which is why extremely high light transmission values have become less important compared to earlier times.

Strengths

  • Extensive range of use: 2.2–14x covers everything from driven hunts to long-range shots
  • Compact design: 323 mm overall length – ideal for clip-on devices
  • Illuminated dot & handling: 10 brightness levels, motion sensor, well-thought-out positioning
  • Made in Germany: solid construction, well-matched mechanics
  • BDC turret retrofittable: modular use for long-range shooters

Weaknesses

  • Parallax from 45 m: limitation when using rear clip-on devices at close range
  • Illuminated dot: not bright enough in full sunlight or snowy winter forests
  • Not a “wow-factor” optic – technically solid, but more inconspicuous than innovative

Conclusion

An honest all-rounder for your hunting ground

The MINOX RS-6 2.2–14x50 is not a high-end showpiece, but a practical tool. It reliably meets hunting needs in everyday use – whether with roe deer in May, wild boar sits with clip-on devices, or quick driven hunt shots in autumn. Those looking for an all-round optic with intuitive handling, good mechanics, and German manufacturing will find a dependable companion here – without unnecessary extras.
