A FIELD REPORT FOR YOUNG HUNTERS

The MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50

How did your journey as a young hunter began? In those exciting early days, you ask yourself lots of questions – especially: What equipment do I really need? Beginners often lack experience when it comes to rifle scopes. Today, I would like to tell you about my own journey – from my first, simple scope to my current companion: the MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50. And how this has changed things for me.

My first rifle scope

What really matters

As a new hunter, I initially had a simple rifle scope on my rifle. Due to my lack of experience, my expectations were rather modest: it should work, provide a clear image, and give me a quick overview when aiming.

However, as I gained experience, I quickly realized that this scope had its limitations, especially at dusk. The outlines of the game became blurred, making it difficult to identify – and it was precisely in these moments that I wished for better quality and reliability.

As a young hunter, you are often excited and uncertain at first, and you approach many things tentatively. You don't yet know exactly what your needs are and only gain experience over time – whether at the shooting range or through exchanges with more experienced hunters.

It became increasingly clear to me that I had to feel completely comfortable with my tools of the trade. Only when I trust my weapon and my optics can I act calmly, with focus and confidence. This trust was ultimately the reason why, after two years of hunting, I wanted to switch to a new rifle scope – one that really suited me.

What was important to me in a rifle scope

After two years of hunting experience, I knew pretty much exactly what was important to me:

  • Twilight performance: Clear vision for as long as possible, even in poor lighting conditions.
  • Field of view and magnification: For reliable targeting of game.
  • Weight and size: Particularly important given my rather petite stature.
  • Fit: My short stock (31.5 cm) should harmonize perfectly with the optics.

Getting to know the MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50

At the Jagd & Hund 2025 trade fair, I had the opportunity to try out the MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50 for myself. Right from the start, I was impressed by its compact design, low weight, and razor-sharp reticle. After delivery, I mounted the rifle scope myself and zeroed it in. After just a few shots, everything was perfect – a feeling of confidence right from the start.

Zeroing in and first impressions

Before going hunting with it, I naturally had to visit the shooting range. Together with a fellow hunter, I mounted the scope using ring mounts – quick and easy.
A few test shots helped me familiarize myself with the field of view, magnification, and handling. After the first few shots and a few adjustments, the shot pattern was precise – and I immediately felt the difference: a clearer field of view and a new ease of aiming.

Why a 50 and not a 56

This decision was not easy, as I had previously been using a 56 scope. Ultimately, however, three points tipped the scales:

  • Weight: A decisive factor for me as a petite hunter.
  • Versatility: The 50 is flexible – perfect for hunting from a blind and driven hunts.
  • Comfort: It simply fits better with my rifle and with me.

Weight will play a major role, especially if I add technology – such as an attachment – in the future. For me, the RS 6 2.2-14x50 offers the ideal balance of performance, handling, and comfort.

First hunting experiences with the new scope

My first outing with the new scope took me to Thuringia to hunt roe deer. On the very first evening, I was able to shoot a weak yearling buck with friends in a disaster area – cleanly behind the shoulder, calmly in the firing position. A moment when everything just fell into place.

But the real highlight came later: I was sitting in the high forest as dusk was falling. Suddenly, I heard noises behind me – a herd of wild boars! In the light of the full moon, I recognized their silhouettes and took aim with my weapon. Through the MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50, I could clearly distinguish the animals even in the moonlight – sows, piglets, everything was clearly visible.

For me as a small game hunter, it was an unforgettable moment. There is no wild boar in my home hunting ground – and I will never forget this scene in the Thuringian high forest, in the moonlight and complete silence.

Confidence and safety with the MINOX RS-6

For me, the investment was absolutely worth it. The MINOX RS 6 2.2-14x50 is a perfect fit for my rifle, my stature, and my hunting requirements. It supports me technically – and gives me the most important feeling when hunting: safety.

Since then, I haven't used any other rifle scope on my rifle.

Kira Baumann

I am Kira Janin from beautiful Schleswig-Holstein. Here in the far north, I hunt in a wonderful field area with a good population of small game. Although I do not come from a hunting family, I have loved nature and animals since childhood.

I have been hunting regularly since 2022 and obtained my hunting license in 2023. I now hunt with my young German long-haired pointer, which I am training myself. Together, we experience hunting from a whole new perspective – educational, fulfilling, and full of passion.

Because one thing is certain: I have found my home in hunting.
